Advocacy

Advocacy is work that aims to influence decisions within political, economic and social systems. Mill Neck is an advocate for the Deaf Community—we work hard to support and educate others about the needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. Mill Neck has played an integral part working with Nassau and Suffolk county legislators to promote laws that would provide equal access to communication. Through our efforts, all of Long Island will be able to watch interpreted newscast when regional emergencies, such as hurricanes, occur. Nassau County has instituted a Deaf Visor bill, which will improve communication between police and a Deaf/Hard of Hearing driver during routine traffic stops. Mill Neck is working on similar regional bills in Suffolk County and has worked with state legislators to provide more equality in communication.

We work with all levels of government to make sure that they are aware of their obligations to provide equal communication access. We work with corporations, hospitals and individuals to educate and advocate for the use of professional interpreters.
